Lydia Joan “Joanie” Robertson, 87, of Latonia, KY, passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2020. Born in Covington, KY on March 6, 1933, she was the daughter of the Late Joneth and Nadine McQueen. Joanie was a devoted wife, friend and mother. She was the type of person who, while not a fan of organized charities, would collect clothing and goods to quietly give to those in need. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved a good joke or prank and her generosity and trust knew no bounds. Joanie will be deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved her and whose lives she touched in some small way. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Robertson. Joanie is survived by her daughters: Kaycie Robertson and Michelle (Wayne) Mayfield; son Michael (Judy) Robertson; sister Pam (Dan) Carmichael; grandchildren: Misty, Christy, Tina, Shauna, Amy and Krista and numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A Visitation will be held Thursday, July 30, 2020 from 11:00 A.M. until the Funeral Service at 12:00 P.M. (Noon) at Serenity Funeral Care, 40 West 6th Street, Covington, KY 41011. It is hard to try and sum up a life’s existence in a few words, especially when it comes to my mother, Joanie. On one hand, she was open and generous to a fault, yet could hold on to a secret given in trust.

I’ve learned that all us McQueens share in the gift of theater to some degree and she certainly had the talent for fame and fortune. She would regale us with stories and anecdotes of past loves and escapades worthy of any silver screen, yet she saved the best of her talents for us children. She danced with us, sang with us, cooked with us, skated with us, heck she even built things with us. She gave us séances and ghost stories and enjoyed the receiving end of a joke/prank just as much as the giving end.

People say calm waters run deep and you never know a person, but you didn’t have to know her to know the kind of person she was… Just look around, every one of us have been the beneficiary of her friendship. Every store she visited, every place she went, people would know and call out to her, happy to have run into her for a moment. Even vacations may have started out alone but by the end of the day there were friends old and new to share the time with.

I keep hearing the phrase “I am sorry for your loss”… Well, I am sorry for your loss too. To know Joanie is to love her and if you knew her, you are missing her too. If you didn’t know her?… Well then, I am afraid you have suffered the worst loss of all.
